Why Nordic Summer Holidays Are Amazing

The day never ends
Thanks to the Midnight Sun, days feel like they never have to end during a Scandinavian summer. Imagine going out for an evening hike knowing you still have plenty of daylight hours remaining to get back safely. Magic.

Nature puts on quite a show
There is an explosion of flora as Mother Nature comes back to life after a dark, cold winter. From an abundance of edible wild blueberries to flowers carpeting fields, and trees filling out with canopies of stunning green leaves, Scandinavia in spring and summer is a sight to behold!

Midsummer celebrations
Don’t be surprised if you happen upon a seemingly random festival or celebration. This region is steeped in Viking history and culture; lands that traditionally worshipped nature’s power and the powerful energy of the summer solstice. Events, bonfires, and celebrations marking this special time can be incredibly moving and memorable to witness.

Best Scandinavian Cities to Visit in Summer 2026

There is no single best Nordic country to visit in summer; they are all equally fabulous! The same can be said about Scandi cities. When the sun comes out, all the big-ticket destinations really show off.

You could find yourself:

  • Kayaking between lakes and blueberry picking in forests outside of Stockholm;
  • Relaxing to the world-class melodies of summer street busking and open-air art exhibitions in Copenhagen;
  • Admiring the best of Finnish design on a walking tour of Helsinki;
  • Cruising the fjords between Oslo and Bergen, or
  • Discovering the Golden Circle outside Reykjavik in plenty of golden summer light.

Pardon the regional pun, but this is just the tip of the adventure iceberg. Whatever your plans, wherever you go, Scandinavian cities will have plenty on offer over summer.

Polar Day Explained

Before we leave you, we should touch on Polar Day. This is essentially another word for the Midnight Sun. The arrival of summer sees Earth’s northern hemisphere tilt closer to the sun, bringing more daylight hours and warmth (always appreciated after the cold winter spell!). The closer you get to the Arctic Circle, the more pronounced the tilt (and, therefore, the longer the daylight hours). Polar Day can last up to five months in high-Arctic locations such as Norway’s Svalbard.

If you envision everlasting days of scorching sun, dial the Mercury levels down. The Midnight Sun is more subtle and nuanced—think more like a ‘Monet sunset’.
